Player’s Guide

Welcome to Vancouver

Thank you for joining us for Vancouver International Pride (VIP) 2025 – celebrating our 25th year! We are so excited to host you in our wonderful city for a weekend full of tennis, Pride, friendship, and fun 🌈🎾

The VIP tournament is taking place on the unceded and traditional lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples.

VIP is an inclusive and welcoming event. All participants and spectators must follow our code of conduct.

A few people wanted to extend a special welcome:

From the Tournament Directors:

Welcome to Vancouver, Players!

On behalf of the Vancouver Tennis Association (VTA), welcome to the 2025 Vancouver International Pride (VIP) Tennis Tournament. We are proud to be hosting over 140 players from near and far.

The VIP takes place over Vancouver’s pride weekend, and this year, it is extra special as we celebrate the 25th edition of the VIP. We are so excited that you have chosen to make the VIP part of your pride celebrations and we hope that this is an opportunity for you to reconnect with old friends and make new connections.

This is our first year hosting the tournament as co-directors and it truly is a labour of love. We could not do it without the rest of our VTA board members, as well as our friends, volunteers, donors and sponsors. We are indebted to the community that has supported us, our club, and this event from year to year.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend and we cannot wait to meet you all. See you on the courts!

Tournament Desk

The Tournament Desk will be located by Court 3. This is also where lunch will be served.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms are located underneath the Stanley Park Brewpub. Unfortunately there are no showers available at this facility.

Water Fountain

Located 30m/100ft past the tournament desk on the path.

Food & Drink Concession

Stanley Park Brewery has a concession stand tucked around the right side of the building (facing court 15) with beer, snacks, and food options.

Play Format

Players will be expected to adhere to a 5-minute warm-up period (strictly enforced).

Match Format
For Main Draw, Singles and Doubles:

  • Matches will be best two out of three sets, regular scoring
  • 12-point tiebreak played at 6-games-all for the first 2 sets (i.e. a regular tiebreak where the winner is first to seven points, winning by two points)
  • 10-point super tiebreak will be played for matches going to a 3rd set

To clarify: A “12-point tie break” for the first two sets when it’s 6-6 is first to seven points, win by 2 (the terminology of 12-points alludes to a score of 7-5 in the tiebreak). But the third set we call a “10-point tiebreak”. Which is first to win 10 points, win by 2. Tennis terminology is weird.

Match format may be altered at the discretion of the Tournament Directors.

Avoidances
We cannot guarantee accommodation of scheduling avoidances but will try where no hardship is imposed on others in the draw. Avoidances specifically for first morning draws will not be accommodated.

Consolation Play (Singles + Doubles)

Consolation play will be offered to players who lose their first match in main elimination draws (round robin draws will not have consolation).

On Sunday you must register in-person at the Tournament Desk to play in the consolation draw (registration time will be announced in the WhatsApp Group).

The play format for consolation matches will be:

  • 8 game pro-sets (first to 8 games wins), no-ad scoring
  • 12 point tiebreak at 8 games all

If time allows, consolation finals will be best two out of three set matches, regular scoring, tiebreak at 6 games all, third set 10 point super tiebreak.

The Tournament Directors my change consolation offering and play format due to scheduling and weather.

Tournament Etiquette Reminders

Some friendly tournament/tennis etiquette reminders:

  • A ball that is 99% out, it is 100% in. Call the balls on your side of the court (only) – if you are unsure: the ball is in.
  • If you need to cross a court please wait for a point to conclude before proceeding or opening the gate to enter.
  • If a ball from another court interrupts your point in play, announce “ball on court” and replay the point (from first serve).
  • Never interrupt another court’s point in play (unless there is a safety concern), it is up to those players on court to call interruptions on their court.
  • If you feel you need a judge for line-calls please let one of our roaming volunteers know.

Stanley Park Brewing and the Pitch & Putt (often with a shorter line) sell bottled water and Gatorade.

Food

A lunch will be provided for tournament players on Saturday and Sunday, and light snacks provided Monday.

Things to Do

Vancouver Pride

Check out the full list of Vancouver Pride events, Pride Festival and Pride Parade.

Bike Stanley Park

Hire a bike and cycle the perimeter of the park (the Seawall), the best way to get acquainted with Stanley Park and this core piece of Vancouver life (approx. 1.5 hours).

English Bay

A must visit, but also one of the busier areas in the city. Beautiful views, close to cafés and food.

Third Beach

A often quieter out-of-the-way beach in Stanley Park (25+ minute walk from the courts).

Second Beach Swimming Pool

A nice place to cool off overlooking the ocean (approx. $8).

Denman Street

Denman Street has a plethora of restaurants and food options – some favourites are Nook, Sushi Abroad, The Jungle Room, Kingya, Legendary Noodle, and Jingle Bao. If for some reason you can’t find something, continue up Robson Street for more options.

Davie Street

Davie Street, between Jervis and Burrard Streets, is the core of the Vancouver gayborhood with restaurants, bars, nightclubs, local shops, and services – lively both at night and during the day.

Breka Bakery & Café

Open 24/7 for those late night munchies (several locations).

FAQs

How can I get in contact?

Emailing tournaments@vtatennis.ca is the best method to contact our Tournament Directors.

Please make sure to join the tournament WhatsApp group for updates.

Any of our volunteers at the tournament or events will be able to direct your inquiry – as well as several team members monitoring the @vtatennis.ca Instagram account.

Can we play on the public courts?

Courts 1-6 can be booked through Tennis BC ($5-15 per half hour block) when not in use by the tournament. Courts 7-17 are public courts.

We have permits for and will be using the following courts:

  • Saturday & Sunday: All 17 courts
  • Monday: Courts 1-6 and 12-17 (with 7-11 open to the public).

If you choose to use the public courts make sure you follow the public court guidelines. The practice wall remains open to the public during the tournament.

Players are responsible to keep up-to-date with the schedule so as to not miss a match. Use courts at your own risk – our Tournament Directors and volunteers will not be monitoring public courts or practice wall.
