Executive Committee for 2010

David Surette- President I’ve played tennis since my early teens and joined the VTA a few years after moving here from Victoria in 1999. VTA membership and participation has resulted in the formation of several lasting friendships. Some of my best vacation experiences in the past 10 years have been travelling with these friends to GLTA-sanctioned tennis tournaments throughout the US & Canada. I think that providing an opportunity for participation in a healthy recreational social and competitive activity like tennis is a benefit to the GLTB community as a whole. I served as Treasurer for a few years shortly after joining the VTA and am happy to return to the Board as President for the 2008/09 year. Little known fact about me: Before moving to Vancouver I had a pet Iguana for 4 years named Manny. |

Brian Bella- Vice President I joined the VTA in 1994 (I was only 12!!). I was just coming out and noticed information about the VTA in Xtra West. Everyone was very friendly and it was the best thing I could have done to get ‘out’ there. One of my goals is to make sure any new VTA member gets such a friendly welcome as I did so many years ago. Little known fact about me: I can’t think of anything that everyone doesn’t already know about me! |

Ron - Treasurer I joined the VTA in 1995 because I’m obsessed with gay sport leagues! I enjoy the VTA because I’ve met so many amazing people. Little known fact about me: I still have my first racquet: a Slazenger Pro Ceramic from 1989. It has classic looks and was made in “West” Germany. |

Charles Friesen - Tournament Director I joined the VTA in 2006 after moving to Vancouver from Prince George. I joined because I love tennis and when I heard of a gay tennis league I thought it could just be heaven. I enjoy a lot of things about the VTA but especially the variety of formats in which play is offered and the friendliness of all the volunteers I’ve ever encountered at events. Little known fact about me: I’ve personally planted over 430,000 trees and worked in the forest industry for 20 years. |

Harry Young - Play Director I’ve been playing tennis pretty pathetically on and off for over thirty years now. Despite highly suspect hand/eye coordination and precious little evidence of any improvement to my game, I still love to play. I discovered the VTA in the spring of 2007 and spent the subsequent summer looking forward to playing tennis every Friday evening. What a privilege it is to be able to play tennis in such a gorgeous setting with such an amazing group of extremely friendly people. Little known fact about me: I turned down the opportunity to watch Steffi Graf play Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in the final of the 1995 French Open at Roland Garros. A decision I will regret for the rest of my life! |

| Jason Lau- Secretary
Being athletically challenged, tennis was one of the few sports I actually enjoyed not being able to play very well. I joined the VTA in 2007 in an effort to be more active and also to connect with the LGBT community. It’s been an amazing time, meeting wonderful people, learning about the game, and getting an opportunity to give back and help out with all the exciting events & activities that the VTA offers. Little known fact about me: A good part of my diet consists of meat & potatoes, junk/fast food … hence the “effort to be more active” … note I said nothing about changing my diet … ! |

Ben Clermont- Member Services Director I was introduced to this great sport when I starting dating my partner Terence. I followed him to several VTA tournaments and events and realized that there were beginner levels in which I could participate … so I did and the rest is history. Without the VTA, my game certainly wouldn’t be where it is today, and I wouldn’t have met so many great people. I’m happy to have found a way to give back. Little known fact about me: Appearance and temperament aside, I’m actually quite social, just contact Terence, my social coordinator.! |
